This weekend marked Leighton’s Baptism. We were excited to welcome both sides of our family to town and christen Leighton into our faith. Matt’s sister’s served as her Godmothers and My brother an his husband, her Godfathers.
Leighton’s christening was the most special because it was the first time Matt and I could look at one another and know that everyone in our family was accepted into this faith. That church, that sacred space, is a place of love, with people who practice the limitless art of love.
As the mass moved forward Leighton was surrounded by her family and friends, and folks who promised to raise her up as a child of God. We stood in a deep circle, while a guitar strummed hymns, and we watched her get bathed into a way of thinking. Be positive, be kind, be loving, and be faithful. That’s it. There’s no magic formula to being a good person, other than to simply be a good person.
Standing there, in that space, I watched our friends gather around our littlest girl and my heart nearly stopped. When people you’ve chosen, chose to spend their time with you it makes your heart swell with gratitude. We could not have landed in a better place. We could not ask for more amazing friends. We could not survive without their support and love and encouragement. I stood there feeling very proud of the family I helped to make and the friends my children will spend their life with. I looked at Matt and wondered how did we ever get so lucky?
I want to thank everyone who came out of their way to celebrate Leighton with us. You dropped your own lives to pick up a piece of ours, and we thank you. I also want to thank my brother and JC whom serve as second parents and incredible uncles to my children. When we count our blessings, we count you twice. Thank you for hosting us and for loving our children as your own.
**Most of these photos were taken my Brian McCabe, a masterful photographer and wonderful human being. A million thank you’s to him, for capturing us.
